Those suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder will often relive the traumatic event through flashbacks or nightmares. Symptoms are often persistent and can consist of the following:

  • Physical symptoms such as sweating, nausea, trembling and flashbacks
  • Outbursts of anger
  • Feeling irritable
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Hypervigilance

The causes of post traumatic stress disorder are varied but can include

  • Giving birth
  • Being involved in a serious accident
  • Being assaulted
  • Military combat
  • Witnessing violent deaths

The Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCPSYCH) have developed several sets of criteria in order to help medical professionals reach an accurate diagnosis, including many of the symptoms mentioned above, such as flashbacks, nightmares, irritability, mood swings, exhaustion, depression and relationship difficulties. If symptoms such as these began after a traumatic event but have started to ease off and improve in the six week post trauma period, then it may be that they were part of the body’s natural coping mechanism. However, if the symptoms persist for longer than six weeks and show no signs of improving then it is advisable to seek medical advice from your GP.

As a master practitioner of Cognitive Hypnotherapy I have been trained in EMI (eye movement integration technique). EMI has been shown to be an effective treatment for post traumatic stress disorder. EMI involves performing a series of right to left eye movements whilst simultaneously recalling a traumatic event. It is not fully understood how EMI works, but it is believed that it may help the malfunctioning part of the brain (the hippocampus) to process distressing memories and flashbacks so their influence over your mind is reduced.

Along with EMI, I use other techniques as well as hypnotherapy  to unlock stored emotion so that the trauma can be revisited and explored from a different perspective.
