Fears and phobias tend to fall into different categories, some of the most common are:
Evolutionary: phobias that have been passed down through generations. Fears such as spiders, snakes or heights. These fears exist when we are born, which is why more people are scared of snakes and spiders than cars. Far more people are killed in car accidents (1,713 deaths in the U.K. in 2013) than die as a result of being bitten by snakes or spiders (1 death in the U.K. in the past 40 years).
Social Phobias: this is where someone suffers from extreme anxiety in social situations. They have a fear of being judged by others. This may apply only in certain circumstances such public speaking. Or may spiral into fearing all situations involving other people.
Learned association: as a child something may happen, which then embeds itself deeply. As the person becomes an adult the irrational fear remains. For example, a child may have been frightened by someone wearing a clown mask and now as an adult has an irrational fear of clowns (coulrophobia). Some phobias may appear funny such as a fear of buttons (koumpounophobia). Or a fear of beards (pogonophobia), but for the sufferer it can often have a very negative influence on their life. Preventing them from achieving their full potential.
Some common phobias include a fear of flying, dogs, visiting the dentist and a fear of germs. I work with clients as individuals to understand the root cause of their fear. Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach in order to find solutions that are specific to them.
